Zimbabwe News.Net
Thursday 3rd September, 2009

Indonesian rescue workers have had to pull bodies from homes buried in a landslide.

Police and military personnel used their hands to remove rubble.

The landslide was triggered by a powerful earthquake that is known to have killed over 60 people and severely damaged more than 10,000 buildings.

The 7.0 magnitude quake, was centered just off the coast of Java.

The worst affected district was in West Java province, which has since been visited by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

He pledged $500,000 in national assistance to help victims.

More than 24,800 homes, offices, schools and mosques were damaged and over 3,000 people have been relocated in temporary Red Cross shelters.

There may be more victims and damage when some of the more remote areas assess their damage.

Many of the deaths and injuries were caused by falling debris or collapsed structures.
